Before football became hyper-commercial and globally polished, Saint-Étienne represented something different; green shirts, smoke-filled terraces and a club that embodied the romance of continental football for an entire generation.
The early 80s era remains legendary among football design obsessives. Rich green tones, tricolore detailing and classic sponsor graphics combined to create one of the most iconic aesthetics in European football. The 1980–81 side, featuring a young Michel Platini, would go on to win the French title and cement Saint-Étienne’s status as one of football’s great cult clubs.
This piece strips those visual elements back into a minimal composition inspired by analogue football culture, French sportswear design and the atmosphere of the Stade Geoffroy Guichard.
A tribute to Les Verts and the era when Saint-Étienne felt like the coolest club in Europe. The club’s green and white identity remains one of the most recognisable in French football history.
